Can I Repair a Heat Pump on My Own?

Heat pumps are great comfort solutions. With a single installation, you have electric-powered heating and cooling to keep your home pleasant and livable throughout the year. You’ll probably pay less for heating with a heat pump than you would with a furnace. There are many reasons that heat pumps are increasing in popularity around the country.

What happens if your heat pump breaks down, either at the peak of winter or summer? You’ll want the heat pump working again as soon as possible, and that may tempt you to try to fix it yourself. Is that something you can do? Or will you need to call for professional heater repair in Decatur, GA?

Troubleshooting Is Always a Good Idea…

There’s no problem with troubleshooting a heat pump that isn’t working or is malfunctioning in some way. When you notice a problem with your heat pump, make a number of checks:

  • Is the thermostat set correctly? Is it set to the correct mode? Has its programming been changed?
  • Is there power to the heat pump? A circuit breaker may have tripped and cut off the power.
  • Is the air filter for the heat pump extremely dirty and ready to be changed?
  • Are the vents in all around the house open and unobstructed?
  • Is there anything blocking the outdoor cabinet of the heat pump that needs to be cleared away?

You may discover a simple issue was behind your heat pump trouble.

…But If It Doesn’t Work, Call Professionals

If you’ve taken the above steps and still haven’t solved the problem, you may think it’s time to get out the toolkit, maybe look up some tutorial videos online, and open up your heat pump to fix it yourself.

Please don’t! When it comes to actual repairs for a heat pump, you need to have professionals. There are several reasons for this:

  • Warranty: The manufacturer’s warranty for heat pumps prohibits amateur tampering. If you try to fix a heat pump yourself, or have a non-professional “handyman” do it, you’ll void the warranty and leave yourself open to steep repair costs that would have otherwise been covered.
  • Refrigerant Handling: Heat pumps are refrigerant-based systems like air conditioners. To work with refrigerants requires special certification for their safe handling and disposal. Refrigerant leaks are one of the most common heat pump malfunctions, and you don’t have the license to work with it accurately or safely.
  • Equipment: Professionals have the specialized and expensive equipment necessary to make repairs to an air conditioning system. These devices aren’t cost-effective for the general public to have, and they require special training to use.
  • Cost: You might think that going DIY is the money-saving route. It’s not! Aside from the problem with voiding the warranty, amateur tampering with a heat pump is more likely to create bigger problems requiring more expensive solutions. It can also leave an AC running at worse energy efficiency, turning it into a power-waster. It’s far better to pay professionals to get the job done right the first time.
  • Time: Be honest: do you really want to spend an entire day (or days) attempting to repair your air conditioner (and probably failing) when experts can get it done correctly in a few hours?
