Ways You Can Put Ductless Cooling and Heating to Work for Your Home

Ductless systems have made major inroads into homes over the past few years. These variations on heat pumps allow for a home to enjoy cooling and heating in different rooms without requiring either space-consuming ductwork or inefficient and unattractive window ACs.

A ductless system (also called a ductless mini split heat pump) works by having an outdoor unit connected to several small wall-mounted air handlers distributed around the house. Each air handler has its own refrigerant coil and blower fan to send heated or cooled air directly into the living space. Ductless systems have high energy efficiency, lead to better indoor air quality, and allow for zoned heating and cooling since only the air handlers in occupied rooms need to run.

Another major benefit is that ductless systems are flexible. You can put them to work in your home (even if you already have ducts) in a variety of ways. Here are several.

Enjoy whole-house comfort if you don’t have ductwork

Older homes were often constructed without ducts, and smaller newer homes may also bypass putting in bulky ducts. Adding a central HVAC system in these homes requires extensive renovations to put in ductwork. A ductless system offers a much easier alternative that won’t disrupt your home and requires only a basic installation from professionals.

Convert a garage or attic space to a living space

Expanding your home with a garage or attic conversion? These spaces aren’t connected to the HVAC system, and the current HVAC system may not be able to handle these additions. There’s a better solution: install a mini split for the new room. It’s fast, requires little construction, and the slim profile of the outdoor unit needed for a single air handler makes it even easier to fit on your property.

Remodel your home without worrying about ductwork

Planning a remodel can be exciting, but it comes with challenges, especially when it means expanding or altering your home’s HVAC system. If your remodel includes adding new rooms or altering existing ones, ductwork can be a major hassle. With a ductless mini split system, you can bypass the need for ductwork altogether. This simplifies the remodeling process and allows you to maintain the look you want without bulky ducts getting in the way.

Target those hard-to-heat-and-cool spots in your house

Every home has those tricky spots that seem impossible to keep at a comfortable temperature, whether it’s a sunroom that gets too hot in the summer or a basement that stays chilly in the winter. Ductless systems offer a perfect solution for these areas. You can install an air handler in those specific rooms to directly address their unique temperature needs without affecting the rest of your home.

Make life for allergy and asthma sufferers easier

Ductless systems not only offer efficient heating and cooling but also help with indoor air quality. Traditional ductwork contains dust, allergens, and other particles that get circulated throughout your home whenever the HVAC system turns on. Since ductless systems don’t use ducts, they help reduce the spread of these contaminants, providing a cleaner, healthier environment, especially for those with allergies or asthma.
