What Causes an Iced-Over AC System

Your air conditioner needs to be in optimal condition at this point in the season. If you are already seeing problems in your AC unit at this point in the season, you may be in trouble. Thankfully, our team is here to help.

Today we want to discuss why an air conditioner that is developing a layer of ice on its evaporator coil is in need of repairs. While some people may think that ice build-up in their AC is a sign of a system that is working really well, this is the furthest thing from the truth!

What Ice in Your AC ACTUALLY Means

When ice collects on an AC’s evaporator coil, it indicates there is something that is hindering the absorption and release of heat that is so vital to the creation of cool air for your home. If you notice that there is ice forming on your AC’s evaporator coil, then you need to have the system checked by a technician, even if the system is still producing a small amount of cooling.

What Causes Ice in Your Air Conditioner

So, what kinds of issues are the source of a problem like this? As we mentioned, ice in your AC is a sign that there is a problem with the absorption of heat in the air conditioner. This can be caused by the following issues:

  • An overly dirty evaporator coil. Dirt collecting on the evaporator coil is going to hinder the refrigerant supply from absorbing the usual amount of heat. This reduces the efficiency of the system and its ability to effectively cool the air that will be blown into your home. The worse the dirt build-up gets, the more likely it will create an ice layer as it will end up cooling the space around the coil rather than the air.
  • A refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is the substance that is responsible for absorbing heat from the air pulled out of your home and then releasing it outside. A refrigerant leak allows this vital chemical to escape the refrigerant line. This will in turn reduce heat absorption and can actually lead to ice build-up on your evaporator coil as it becomes colder and colder.
  • Reduced airflow into your AC. Last but not least, you may encounter an icy AC coil if there is a problem with the flow of warm air into your AC. Without enough warm air coming into the system due to an issue like a clogged air filter or broken blower fan, your system won’t have any heat to absorb, leading to ice build-up on the evaporator coil.

If you are dealing with an icy air conditioner, it means that it is time to schedule an air conditioner repair in Dublin today. The longer this problem goes unaddressed, the more likely you are to encounter a full system breakdown.
