Let’s Look at the Pros and Cons of Different Heating Systems

You’ve given serious thought to scheduling a heating system installation in Conyers, GA during the fall. If you aren’t certain about whether your current heater is ready for a replacement, we recommend calling our team for a consultation. We can provide regular heating maintenance services for your home and, during the inspection of the heater, we can tell you if it’s time for a replacement.

If you do decide on a replacement, the next question is “What type?” Below we’ll go over the major options for heating in your house and their pros and cons. Our technicians will help find the right solution for your specific needs.

Gas Furnace

Pro: This is the most common type of heating system in the country thanks to the level of heating it can provide. A gas furnace is reliable and can beat back even the coldest day. Thanks to the lower costs of natural gas, a gas furnace can also be a cost-effective heating option for homes that will save money compared to an electric furnace.

Con: A home must have a natural gas connection to power a gas furnace. Some people have concerns about safety issues with using natural gas (although with maintenance there is little cause to worry).

Electric Furnace

Pro: An electric furnace can work for any home—there is always a model that will match for a specific house. An electric furnace can often run for more years than gas model, and it costs less to install upfront.

Con: An electric furnace is not as powerful as a gas furnace and takes longer to heat up a home. It can also run up higher energy bills because of the cost of electricity.

Heat Pump

Pro: A heat pump is two comfort systems in one—a heater and air conditioner. For homeowners who are looking to replace both a furnace and an AC, a heat pump is an excellent and affordable option. Heat pumps can save energy during heating mode compared to an electric furnace, and they are among the safest methods available for winter comfort.

Con: Because a heat pump is a more expensive installation than either a standalone heater or air conditioner, it’s only a cost-effective option if a house needs to have both heating and AC replaced at once. (It’s wasteful to purchase a heat pump if it will only work in one mode!) A heat pump can sometimes struggle with extremely low temperatures, although this is rare in Georgia.

Ductless Mini Split

Pro: A ductless mini split is a heat pump, so it has the same benefits (and drawbacks), but with the difference that it’s a more flexible choice for homes that either lack the space for ductwork or have difficulty heating and cooling certain areas. A ductless mini split offers zone heating (and cooling) and an edge when it comes to energy efficiency because of the lack of ducts.

Con: For a home that already has ductwork, a ductless mini split is often only useful for add-on rooms or for single parts of the house that can’t get warm enough.
