Why Is My Home Not Getting Warm Enough?

cold-man-and-woman-in-parkas

You want to stay warm and toasty through the season in your house, especially since you’ll be spending more time indoors than usual. If you discover that your house isn’t as warm as it should be, what can you do about it?

You might first think that the answer is to turn up the thermostat more until you feel warm. But how much more are you planning to turn it up? Higher than you normally do? If so, that’s not right. Something else is wrong with your HVAC system that’s resulting in less cold-weather comfort.

Rather than putting on a parka when you’re indoors, call our experts to see what needs to be repaired. We’re the local pros when it comes to heating and AC services in Monroe, GA.

Reasons You Just Aren’t Getting the Heat You Need

So … what’s happening? Is the heating system in serious trouble, or is there a simpler explanation for your reduced comfort? We’ll go through some of the more common reasons for a home that’s not warm enough for winter.

  • Faulty thermostat: This happens often—it doesn’t take much of a temperature miscalibration in the thermostat to cause it to begin shutting off the heater before it can fully warm up the house. The thermostat may be reading incorrect temperatures, or a nearby heat source is causing it to register the house is warmer than it is. Our technicians can recalibrate or otherwise fix the thermostat so it correctly operates the heater.
  • Clogged air filter: Another common problem, although thankfully it’s one you can fix on your own. If the filter for your furnace or heat pump is left in place from earlier in the year, it’s probably congested with dust and lint, and this will impair its ability to warm up enough air and distribute it to the rest of the house. Take out the filter and put in a clean one to see if this fixes the heating problem.
  • Short-cycling: Is the heater turning on and off more frequently than usual? If it’s spending ten minutes or less running before turning off, it’s short-cycling. There are many different causes for this, and not only will it mean the heater won’t stay on long enough to properly warm the house, but it will also put immense strain on the heating system that will wear it down and raise your bills.
  • Leaky ventilation system: The ductwork of the ventilation system may be the problem. Air leaks allowing heated air to escape will cause a drop in air pressure as well as heating. This will also cause a spike in bills along with a decline in comfort. Only professionals can accurately locate and seal a leaky ventilation system.
  • An over-the-hill heater: A loss of heating capacity could simply signal that the heater is too old to work effectively anymore. Furnaces and heat pumps will often start to suffer from capacity loss when they’re older than fifteen years. If your heating system is in this upper age range, time to consider getting it replaced—it’s already on its way toward a full failure.
