Why a Booming Heater Is a Bad Thing

woman-listening

Does turning on your furnace heater lead to the sound of an explosion? If so, you aren’t imagining things. What’s more, what you are hearing really is a small explosion. It is also a sign that your furnace needs help from a professional technician for repairs before you need a full system replacement.

The booming noise from your furnace heater is created by an issue that causes gas to build up inside the system. We will explain why and how booming happens and why this sound and others should prompt a call for heating repair in Warner Robins.

Explaining a Booming Furnace

When a furnace begins to create a booming noise after it is turned on, it isn’t a good sign. What is happening is that a problem with the ignition is causing the gas to build up because it isn’t being burned as usual. When the gas finally does ignite, it’s much greater than normal, creating that booming noise.

As you can imagine, this is a problem that isn’t going to resolve itself. The igniter likely needs to be cleaned out or fixed to get it working properly again. Additionally, it is going to create more repair needs if it isn’t addressed soon enough—such as repairing a cracked heat exchanger.

Other Problem Sounds a Furnace Can Make

Booming is bad news but it can be prevented with maintenance or addressed with expert repairs. But booming isn’t the only noise you need to be on the alert for. Here are some other problematic sounds that you should keep your ears open for.

  • Screeching: This is created by metal scraping against metal. You may have a loose part or a dry motor belt.
  • Rattling or clanging: Loose parts that are shaking or bouncing around may create quite a lot of noise and can lead to additional damage.
  • Hissing: A problem for a furnace or a heat pump. In a heat pump, hissing can indicate a refrigerant leak. In a furnace, it can indicate a cracked heat exchanger that is creating a gas leak.
  • Buzzing or humming: This is likely caused by an electrical problem within the heating system, such as a frayed wire or a bad connection. This can escalate into a bigger issue if not addressed quickly.

When to Call for Heating System Repairs

We’ve covered noises and even explained what some of them mean. But is a noisy heater the only indicator of trouble within your system? As you can probably guess, the answer is that there are plenty of other signs of trouble to watch for. These can include:

  • Short cycling
  • Poor heating
  • Weak airflow
  • Overly dirty air
  • High energy bills
  • Delayed responses
