Watch for Signs of a Heat Pumps That’s Too Old

heat-pumps-beside-house

You can expect to get a good service life from your heat pump if you remember to have it regularly maintained and always call promptly for repairs whenever the unit needs them. (Important reminder: because heat pumps work around the year, they need two maintenance visits per year.)

However, any heat pump has a limited service life, usually from 10-15 years. When a heat pump becomes too old, no amount of regular maintenance or repairs will be able to turn it around and restore it to its original condition. It’s possible to force a heat pump to work for several years longer if you keep having it repaired, but this is costly and the heat pump will perform at much lower effectiveness while causing your utility bills to spike.

It’s important to know when you’ve got an over-the-hill heat pump. A timely heat pump replacement in Dublin, GA means getting a fresh start and saving money. Our technicians can make sure you get the best possible new unit, but first you’ll need to recognize that it’s time to call us.

Signs You’ve Got a Heat Pump That’s Too Old.

  • Frequent repairs: Are you calling for repairs more than once a year? Frequent breakdowns are a sign the system is at the end of its life cycle.
  • Cost of repairs: You don’t want to invest too much money in the repairs you do have to make. Any repair estimate that’s more than half the cost of getting a new system is too expensive. We also don’t recommend spending more than $500 in a single year to keep your heat pump working.
  • Rising utility bills: As a heat pump ages, it will lose energy efficiency. Maintenance will slow this process down, but in the last 1–2 years of a heat pump’s life, it will start to rapidly lose efficiency and raise its operating cost. If your energy bills are climbing even though you’re not using the heat pump more than usual, it may be time for a replacement.
  • Inconsistent heating and cooling: If some rooms in your home are too hot while others are too cold, your heat pump may be struggling to maintain the comfort level it used to. This often warns that the heat pump’s heating/cooling capacity is failing.
  • Unusual noises: A heat pump that’s nearing the end of its life will often make grinding, rattling, or squealing sounds, signaling that the components are wearing out. A generally noisy heat pump is basically asking you to replace it.
  • Age: If your heat pump is over 10 years old, it’s time to start planning for a replacement. Even with proper maintenance, most heat pumps don’t last beyond 15 years, and we don’t recommend trying to get your heat pump to last past this milestone.
