Did You Have Higher Heating Bills This Winter? Let’s See Why…

man-frustrated-with-high-heating-bills

We recommend you look over all your heating costs for the winter. Look over your monthly heating bills and add them up. Compare them to the previous few winters. Has the cost risen a substantial or surprising amount? If the answer is yes, it’s something to look into closer to see if you can make a change.

We’re experts when it comes to home heating in Sandersville, GA, so we know something about why you may have higher heating costs. Follow along below and we’ll point out where our team can help you.

A rise in energy costs

Energy costs tend to rise over time, although they usually don’t make such a huge leap that it will create a startling difference on your bills. However, check with your utility company to see if there’s been a price increase that may account for the higher costs.

Poor insulation

The insulation in your home is an important part of its energy efficiency, sometimes referred to as home performance. The insulation prevents heat from escaping too rapidly, allowing the heating system to work less often trying to replace the heat. But insulation can lose its properties with age or due to water damage or animal nesting. We offer home performance services, including insulation improvements, that can help with this problem.

Lack of maintenance for the heating system

This is one of the most common reasons for seeing a rise in heating costs. A central heater requires professional maintenance each year to help stop it from deteriorating winter after winter. A single year of skipped maintenance can cause a heater to lose 5% of its energy efficiency rating, meaning a 5% increase in costs. After missing a few years, this adds up! We offer maintenance through our Premier Maintenance Plan, which not only covers your heating needs but your air conditioning needs as well. (If you use a heat pump, you’ll need it maintained twice a year.)

Air filter left in place

This is part of heating system maintenance, although it’s a step that you need to take care of most of the time. If you keep the same filter in your forced-air heating system (a furnace or heat pump) for the entire winter, it will become so clogged with the dust, lint, and debris that it catches that it will restrict airflow. This will cause the heater to work much harder than it should and drain extra power. This is an easy problem to fix—put in a clean filter—but it’s maybe harder to get in the habit of doing it. Set reminders for yourself to change the filter every 1–3 months.

Malfunctioning heating system

Those high bills might be sending you a signal that your central heater has a malfunction somewhere. The problem may not be obvious externally because the heater is still putting out warmth, but it’s done enough damage to force the unit to consume more energy. You want to have any malfunction, no matter how “minor” it may seem, professionally repaired by our technicians right away. It’s not just a case of lowering heating costs—it’s also to avoid a more serious malfunction or even safety issues.

Experience the Premier Difference! Premier Heating & Air has been family-owned and operated since 2001.
