The heating system’s age
One of the best reasons to replace a heater is excessive age. The service life expectancies for heating systems depend on the type:
- Gas furnace: 15 years
- Electric furnace: 20 years
- Heat pump & ductless: 10–15 years
Although a heater can exceed its estimate, we don’t recommend you try to push your heater too far past it, as it increases the chance of the other problems listed below and may even lead to the heater developing safety hazards.
Operating costs
Even with the best regular maintenance, a heater will wear down over time. This wear and tear will cause the system to lose energy efficiency and start to raise the cost to run it. If you notice that your heating bills are steadily rising even though you aren’t using the heater more often than usual, it’s a warning that the heater is in the last year of its service life.
Uneven heating
One of the major signs that a heater is losing its capacity is when it starts to heat the house unevenly. The center of the house may still get enough warmth, but other rooms will develop cold spots. Repairs may be able to fix this, but if the heater is already old, it’s probably more cost-effective to have it replaced.
Too many repairs
You shouldn’t need to schedule repairs for your heating system every year just to keep it running. That’s turning into a money sink—money that should go toward getting a replacement. In general, you shouldn’t pay for any repair that’s more than half the cost of getting a new heater. You can also use this rule of thumb: multiply the cost of a repair by the heater’s age in years, and if the result is more than 5,000, it’s time for a new heater.
