We’ve written in previous posts about how leaking air ducts can steal money from your heating and cooling budget without giving you an extra bit of comfort. Quite the opposite, in most cases!
When you have leaking air ducts, the best course of action is to call our team to test the ducts, gauge the extent of the problem, and seal the leaks to restore the airtightness of the ventilation system. When it comes to duct services in Conyers, GA and throughout South Metro Atlanta, we’re the team you can trust to get the job done.
This raises a good point, however: If you can’t see the ductwork in your house because it’s hidden in the walls and up in the attic, how can you know you need air duct sealing? There are ways you can detect the problem so you know it’s time to call us.
Changes in indoor humidity
One of the ways to keep control of humidity inside your house is with proper air circulation. If air leaks begin to interfere with that circulation and allow outside air to seep inside the ductwork, you’ll begin to notice a rise in your home’s humidity. If you haven’t had too many indoor humidity problems before this, we recommend calling us to examine the ducts and the rest of the HVAC system.
Steep rises in energy costs
We mentioned how air leaks steal money from you. It can be a lot of money! Up to 30% of the air moving through the ducts can escape through air leaks and gapping, and that’s money you’ve already paid to heat or cool that’s going to waste. If you’ve seen a rise in your regular energy bills even though you haven’t changed how much you run the AC or heater, you might have leaking ductwork.
Uneven comfort
Few homes can enjoy a perfectly even distribution of conditioned air through all the rooms. There are usually one or two spots that are tricky to get right but a well-installed HVAC system should still be able to get most of the house cooled or warmed. When unexpected hot or cold spots start to pop up around the house, it may be due to air leaks in the ducts.
A drop in airflow from the vents
The airtight seal along ductwork prevents air pressure from dropping so the HVAC system can send a strong current of air to all the rooms. Air leaks cause the pressure to drop and lower the strength of the airflow from the vents. When you detect changes in your home comfort, check on the vents to see if the airflow is weaker. If it is, leaky ducts are a possibility.
Musty and moldy smells
When the air blowing out of room vents takes on a musty or moldy odor, it’s a warning that stale air is getting into the ventilation system. This can occur with air leaks because it allows the air from closed-off parts of the house (the attic, between walls) to infiltrate the currents of air from the HVAC system.
